How To Purchase Tray Cable And Why Copper Pricing Affects The Ultimate Price You Pay
Many Businesses who have followed the markets lately have noticed that commodity prices have been on an upward trajectory through the first part of this year. As vntc cable as well as tray cable, type g, soow cable, and dlo cable are all very much dependent on raw material costs, there has been a noticeable increase in the cost associated with these items.
Most of our long time customers are understandably aware of the effects of rising raw material costs. Most important of course is the cost of copper. Today for instance copper was listed for about $4.30 lb on the COMEX. At this level it is very close to its all time contract high of around $4.60 per pound hit just a few weeks ago at the start of 2011. One wonders how much higher can it go.
Closely following copper in electrical cable production is the cost of oil. As the outer sheathing and conductor insulation of most cables are oil based, the cost of oil plays a significant part in finished price also. Oil of course topped out at about $147 per barrel just 2 1/2 short years ago and is currently on the rise again with all of the problems in the Middle East and North Africa. Oil is currently going for around $104 per barrel.
If the economy continues to improve, it is very possible that we will experience a sustained increase in material input costs. The majority of economists agree that we are seeing a slow but steady recovery that will continue throughout 2011 and beyond.
Many emerging markets are also experiencing better days with China of course being the 800 pound gorilla in terms of economic growth. If we can continue with this current trajectory it is reasonable to believe that copper and oil will continue to appreciate in price. If you are a big buyer of the largest sizes of wire and cable it may be in your best interest to take a look at some projections for the rest of this year and maybe consider stocking up now before we begin to see the large price increases.
How can you capitalize on this knowledge? When you see costs go down on the NYMEX, ensure that the company you are buying from is reducing the costs of their finished items to you. Often, companies are quicker to raise prices than to reduce them. Armed with the knowledge of raw goods costs, make sure that your supplier is pricing their wire and cable appropriately.
If you feel there is a disparity between the cost of the raw commodities and your finished goods price, consider reaching out to another supplier for a competitive bid. There are quite a few distributors who sell tray cable and vntc cable. This extra effort on your part may help you keep more profit for yourself. Plus, knowledge of cost reductions can allow you to lower your bid prices, which may make your bid more competitive than your peers – and allow you come out on top more often.
